What Is Kerf in Laser Cutting? A Plain Guide for Shops

Kerf in laser cutting is the width of material the beam removes as it travels through the sheet. It is not a defect. Every thermal cutting process leaves one, and knowing yours is what keeps finished parts inside print. Shops that ignore kerf end up with holes that gauge undersized and slots that will not accept a mating part.

What Kerf Actually Is

The focused beam melts and vaporizes a narrow channel, and the assist gas blows that molten material out the bottom. The channel left behind is the kerf. On a fiber laser it is narrow, typically a few thousandths of an inch on thin sheet, which is one of the reasons fiber holds tighter detail than plasma or waterjet on the same part.

Kerf is also not perfectly square. On thicker plate the top of the cut is usually slightly wider than the bottom, because the beam is converging and the gas has further to push the melt.

What Changes the Kerf Width

  • Material thickness. Thicker material widens the kerf, and widens the difference between the top and bottom of the cut.
  • Focus position. Moving focus up or down changes the spot size at the surface and therefore the width of the channel.
  • Nozzle diameter and standoff. The gas column shapes how cleanly the melt clears.
  • Assist gas and pressure. Oxygen cutting runs a different kerf than nitrogen on the same steel.
  • Cutting speed and power. Slower travel at the same power puts more heat in, and the kerf opens up.
  • Optics condition. Dirty or damaged optics scatter the beam and drift the kerf away from where your program expects it.

Why Kerf Matters for Part Accuracy

The machine follows a toolpath, and the beam has width. If the control does not offset the path by half the kerf, every outside profile comes out undersized and every hole comes out oversized, by the same amount. That is a systematic error, not random scatter, which makes it easy to spot on a first article and easy to correct. It sits alongside the other factors covered in fiber laser cutting tolerances.

How Shops Compensate for Kerf

The control or the CAM software applies a kerf compensation offset, shifting the beam center half a kerf to the scrap side of the line. The value comes from your own cut chart, one entry per material, thickness, and gas combination. Cut a test coupon, measure it, and record the number. When you change gas, nozzle, or a machine parameter, the number moves, so the chart needs to move with it.

Nesting also has to respect kerf. Parts spaced tighter than the kerf plus a safety margin will cut into each other. Shared line cutting can save material, but only when the offsets are set deliberately.

When a Changing Kerf Is Telling You Something

A kerf that drifts over a shift is a maintenance signal. Worn nozzles, contaminated optics, a protective window nearing end of life, or a chiller that is not holding temperature all shift the beam and open or close the channel. If parts that ran in spec last month are now walking out of tolerance, treat it as a machine condition problem before you rewrite the program. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a narrower kerf always better?

Usually, because it removes less material and holds finer detail, but it is not free. A very narrow kerf gives the assist gas less room to clear molten material, which can cause dross on thicker plate. The right kerf is the one that clears cleanly for your material, which is why cut charts are per material and per thickness on every Tanaka fiber laser.

Do I measure kerf on the top or bottom of the cut?

Measure the finished part against the print, not the channel in the sheet. What matters is the dimension the customer inspects. On thick plate, check both the top and bottom of a coupon so you know how much taper you are carrying.

Does kerf change between machines running the same program?
